Chapter Six — File Functions (continued)
Overview
The GetTempFile function creates a temporary file in the user’s temporary area with an optional extension.
Syntax/Parameters
Syntax
string = GetTempFile ( [string extension] );
Parameters
extension
An optional string containing a file extension for the temporary file. The extension parameter has a maximum size of 16 characters. A delimited period can be present but is not necessary. The default extension is “tmp”,
Return Value
Returns a string containing the temporary file’s name or an empty string on failure. Use the GetLastError function to retrieve error information.
Remarks
The GetTempFile function creates a temporary file, closes it, and returns its name. To access the file, it must be opened with the OpenFile function. The filename is a combination of the application prefix, a unique hexadecimal number, and the extension. It is the script’s responsibility to delete temporary files when they are no longer needed. They are not deleted on application exit.
The temporary file will be located in the user’s temporary area or a temporary area specified for the application.
