IsFilenameValid Function

Overview

The IsFilenameValid function tests a string for having valid Windows filename syntax.

Syntax/Parameters

Syntax

boolean = IsFilenameValid ( string name );

Parameters

name

A string containing the filename. The value cannot contain path or URI components.

Return Value

Returns TRUE if name contains valid filename syntax or FALSE if it does not.

Remarks

The IsFilenameValid function checks the name parameter against Windows requirements for filenames. This includes a maximum size of 255 characters, not leading with a space, not trailing with a period (‘.’), and exclusion of the following characters:

\ ?
/  "
: <
* >
|

The IsFileNameValid function does not test if the file exists. Use the DoesFileExist function to determine if the file exists in the file system.
