Chapter SevenMath Functions (continued)

ArcTangent Function

Overview

The ArcTangent (atan) function returns the principle value of the arc tangent of x expressed as an angle in radians, degrees or gradians.

Syntax/Parameters

Syntax

float = ArcTangent ( float x );

Parameters

x

A float containing a numeric source value. If x is not a float, the data will be converted to a 64-bit floating-point number.

Return Value

Returns a float containing the principle arc tangent of x in the interval [-pi/2,+pi/2] in the default angle mode.

Remarks

In trigonometry, arc tangent is the inverse operation of tangent. One radian is equivalent to 180/PI degrees. Note that because of the sign ambiguity, the function cannot determine with certainty in which quadrant the angle falls only by its tangent value.

The default angle mode is radians where one radian is equivalent to 180/PI degrees. Use the SetAngleMode function to change the returned units.
