The SEC has announced that World Investor Week (WIW) 2023 will focus on the significance of investors taking time to do due diligence, and how doing so may help them avoid fraud and to make better informed investment decisions. The event, which also emphasizes investor education and protection, takes place online and in person October 2 through October 8, 2023. {expires: 2023-10-09}
In its seventh year, the week-long event will educate investors on the importance of practicing due diligence, which includes investors doing the following:
- conducting their own research on investment opportunities
- creating a risk-appropriate, long-term, and diversified investment plan that can help investors manage both changing economic conditions and the market’s ups and downs
- establishing an emergency fund
- learning how to recognize fraud
WIW, a global effort promoted by the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO), brings together regulators from around the world to increase awareness about the importance of investor education and investor protection. The SEC joins the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, the National Futures Association, and the North American Securities Administrators Association in serving as the national coordinator for WIW in the United States. In conjunction with these organizations, the SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy (OIEA) has issued a joint Investor Bulletin on the WIW’s core priorities.
Throughout WIW, the SEC will host outreach events nationwide, in-person and virtual, including the following:
- A radio interview on topics important to older investors
- A live AARP Fraud Watch Network Facebook event
- Classroom activities for high school and college students, including events at Historically Black Colleges and Universities
- Thrift Savings Plan program event for federal employees
- Saving, investing, and fraud protection presentations for older investors, military service members and their families, teachers, and those reentering back into society
