Chapter FiveGeneral Functions (continued)

IsASCIICharacters Function

Overview

The IsASCIICharacters function tests if a string is compliant for ASCII characters excluding white space characters.

Syntax/Parameters

Syntax

boolean = IsASCIICharacters ( string value );

Parameters

value

A string to test.

Return Value

Returns TRUE if value contains only ASCII characters, or FALSE if the string does not.

Remarks

This function differs from the IsASCII function in that white space and other characters are not allowed. The function will return FALSE if these characters are contained within the string.

ASCII characters are effectively 7-bit characters (0-127). This function checks for printable characters, including white space, tab, newline and return. Note that backspace (0x08/8) is also included in the check, but this character and all other control and white space characters will cause the function to return FALSE.

An empty string is technically ASCII compliant. In this case, the IsASCIICharacters function will still return TRUE.
